What are the 5 stages of the video production process?

Tuesday September 27, 2022

‘Video Production’ is the process of creating video content. It can be used for internal, marketing, or entertainment purposes. The five stages of video production are:

Development
Pre-production
Production
Post-production
Distribution.

During Development, you finalise the objectives and details of the video. What do you want to achieve? What’s the value of the results of this video if done right (which in turn helps dictate the budget that can be allocated)? What’s your timeline? etc.

Pre-production is the planning stage. You know you’re going ahead and you start firming things up and getting them booked in. You come up with a script, choose locations, choose talent, create a storyboard, and potentially start designing graphics.

Production is when you actually shoot the video. This involves setting up equipment, lighting, and sound.

Post-production is when you edit the video and add finishing touches like music and graphics.

Finally, distribution is when you make the video available to your audience through channels like YouTube or your website. It’s vital to give this stage sufficient consideration – there’s no point in creating an amazing video if no one sees it!
